Differences between InfoMail/86 and InfoMail/386
-*-
0. Introduction
As is mentioned in the file README.TXT, the manual included in
this archive is the manual for InfoMail/386 1.20. InfoMail/386
1.21 is just a bug fix release, and InfoMail/86 1.21 is a port
of InfoMail/386 for 8086 machines, and other machines which have
trouble with DPMI programs.
The manual will not be updated until the next major release of
InfoMail (i.e. InfoMail 1.30 or greater). Therefore this file
is included to point out exactly what differs between
InfoMail/386 1.20 and InfoMail/86 1.21.
1. System Requirements
Obviously, InfoMail/86 does not require a 386 processor. It
should run on an 8088 or better, RAM requirements unknown.
Since the author's lowest spec machine is a 2MB 386sx16, exact
requirements are not known.
2. Maximum Document Size
InfoMail/386 allows a maximum document size of 65535 bytes. Due
to the lack of a flat memory model on 8086 processors,
InfoMail/86 can only manage 64000 bytes per document.
3. DPMI Server
No DPMI server is supplied with InfoMail/86, because none is
needed.
4. Speed
For screen updates the 8086 version appears to be faster than
the 386 version. More general speed tests have not been
performed. The strange speed difference is probably due to the
fact that the DPMI version needs to switch between real mode and
protected mode every time it displays something. This will also
affect disk I/O to some (unknown) extent.
5. Acknowledgements
Thanks go to Rob Wilson at 2:2502/381 for his help in converting
InfoMail for the 8086.
